lafrench.us website, web radio and « La French Radio NY » mobile app (iOS and Android)
Last updated and effective: October 24, 2026
Version française disponible : Politique de confidentialité — La French Radio New York. In case of discrepancy, the French version prevails.
1. Who we are
La French Radio New York (« La French Radio », « we », « us ») is a French-language web radio for New York audiences. It is published by:
Presse Généraliste des Français de l’Étranger (PGFE), a French simplified joint-stock company (SAS), 10 rue de Penthièvre, 75008 Paris, France — Paris Trade Register 838 578 367.
PGFE is the controller of your personal data.

- Data Protection Officer (DPO): DIPEEO, 95 avenue du Président Wilson, 93100 Montreuil, France — dpo@lafrench.us
2. Scope
This policy applies to:
- the lafrench.us website;
- listening to the live radio and podcasts, on the website and in the app;
- the La French Radio NY mobile app (identifier us.lafrench.radio).
It does not cover third-party sites and services we link to (partner businesses, advertisers, social networks, music platforms, Lesfrancais.press, La French Radio Hong Kong, the Alexa skill). They have their own policies.
Because PGFE is established in France, we apply the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) to all users, wherever they live. We also comply with the U.S. laws that apply to our listeners in the United States (see sections 5, 9, 10 and 11).
3. The app at a glance
- No account is required. We do not ask for your name, email address or phone number.
- The app uses no third-party analytics or advertising tracking tools and does not access your device’s advertising identifier (IDFA or Android Advertising ID).
- If you allow location, it is processed on your phone and is never sent to us.
- The app does not access your microphone, contacts, photos or motion data.
- We do not sell your data or share it for targeted advertising.
4. Data we process, purposes and legal bases
4.1 Listening to the radio and podcasts
To deliver audio, your device connects to our streaming provider RadioKing and to our server. These services technically receive your IP address, device and player type, and connection time and duration. RadioKing produces aggregate listening statistics (number of listeners, duration, approximate geographic area), which we only see in aggregate form. The app also queries RadioKing to display the current track and recently played tracks.
Legal basis: legitimate interest (providing the requested service and measuring overall audience).
4.2 Favorites and preferences
Your favorite tracks and episodes, your preferences (notification topics, « Nearby deals » option) and an offline copy of content are stored only on your phone. They are not sent to us and are deleted if you uninstall the app.
4.3 Location (optional)
Location is requested only if you use the map, the « Around me » screen or the « Nearby deals » option. If you decline, the rest of the app works normally.
- While using the app: your location is used to show French-speaking businesses and services near you.
- In the background (« Always » on iOS, « Allow all the time » on Android): only if you turn on « Nearby deals », which is off by default. Your phone then uses the operating system’s geofencing feature to monitor the nearest partner locations with an active campaign. It shows a notification when you pass near one of them.
In both cases, the calculation happens on your phone. Your location is never sent to PGFE, to partner businesses or to advertisers. The app simply downloads the list of locations and campaigns and compares them with your position locally.
When a proximity notification is shown or you tap « Go there », the app sends our server an anonymous signal containing only the location and the event type (« shown » or « click »). It is used to produce aggregate counts per location, shared with partners as totals only. To avoid counting the same event twice, a one-way encrypted fingerprint of your IP address is kept for no more than one hour, then deleted. Your IP address is not stored in readable form.
The « Go there » button opens Apple Maps or Google Maps with the location’s coordinates. Those apps apply their own privacy policies.
Legal basis: consent. You can withdraw it at any time in the app (More → Notifications & proximity) or in your phone settings.
4.4 Push notifications (optional)
If you accept notifications, we store on our server:
- a technical notification identifier assigned to the app on your device (Expo Push token);
- the platform (iOS or Android) and the app version;
- the topics you chose (news, podcasts, radio);
- the registration and update dates.
This identifier does not reveal who you are. It is deleted when you turn off notifications in the app, or automatically when the service reports that it is no longer valid (after you uninstall the app, or if notifications were turned off in settings). Notifications are routed through Expo, then through Apple’s or Google’s notification service.
Legal basis: consent.
4.5 In-app sponsored banners
The app may show partner banners served by our server. They are not personalized: every user sees the same banners. We anonymously count views and clicks per placement, with the same one-hour duplicate filtering described above. Tapping a banner opens the advertiser’s website in your browser.
Legal basis: legitimate interest (funding our media outlet and reporting to advertisers, without profiling).
4.6 Reading articles and search
When you open an article or search in the Podcasts tab, the app sends our server the article address or your search terms. These requests are kept only in the server’s technical logs (see section 8).
Legal basis: legitimate interest (providing the service).
4.7 Interactive map
The map is provided by Mapcreator B.V. (Eindhoven, the Netherlands) and is displayed in the app as it is on the website. This provider receives your IP address and, if you allow location in the map, your position in order to show where you are.
4.8 Chromecast and AirPlay
If you tap the Cast button, the app looks for Chromecast devices on your local network. On iOS, it asks you for local network access at that point. Playback is sent to the selected device through Google Cast, which receives the address of the stream or episode. AirPlay is handled entirely by iOS.
4.9 Contacting us, surveys and newsletter
- Contact: if you write to us or take part on air, we process the information you provide in order to respond (legal basis: legitimate interest).
- Surveys and contests: they open in your browser. We process the information you provide there (legal basis: legitimate interest or consent, depending on the case).
- Newsletter: we process your email address, possibly your name, and open statistics, through Mailjet (legal basis: consent). Every email includes an unsubscribe link.
4.10 lafrench.us website: cookies and trackers
Non-essential trackers are set only after you agree through the cookie banner.
| Category | Provider | Purpose | Maximum duration |

You can change your choices at any time through the « Manage cookies » link in the footer. If you refuse social media cookies, the related embedded content may not display.
5. Online tracking, Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
The app does not track your activity over time across third-party websites or apps.
On the website, if you accept the related cookies, Google and Meta may collect information about your browsing over time and across other websites.
- Global Privacy Control (GPC): we honor this signal. If your browser sends it, we treat it as a refusal of analytics and social media cookies, and as an opt-out of any sale or sharing of your personal data.
- Do Not Track: there is no common standard for browser « Do Not Track » signals. We do not respond to them separately, but you can achieve the same result with GPC or the cookie banner.
6. Who receives your data
We do not sell your personal data. We do not « share » it for cross-context behavioral advertising, as defined by U.S. state laws. It is processed only by authorized PGFE staff and by the following service providers, on our behalf:
| Provider | Role | Location |

7. International transfers
Our server is hosted in France. Some providers (Expo, Apple, Google, Meta) may process data in the United States. These transfers rely on the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework for certified companies or, failing that, on the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses.

9. Security
We maintain reasonable administrative, technical and physical safeguards, in line with the GDPR and the New York SHIELD Act:
- HTTPS encryption of all traffic;
- back-office access limited to authorized staff;
- secure hosting in France and backups;
- automatic deletion of notification identifiers that are no longer valid.
If a data breach is likely to affect you, we will notify the competent authorities and, where required by law, the affected individuals, within the legal deadlines.
10. Children and teens
La French Radio is intended for a general adult audience and is not designed for children. The app does not ask for your age and collects no identity data.
- Children under 13: we do not knowingly collect their personal information, within the meaning of the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
- Minors under 18 in New York: if we learn that a user is under 18, we process their data only as strictly necessary to provide the service, in accordance with the New York Child Data Protection Act.
- In France: minors under 15 cannot consent alone to consent-based processing such as the newsletter.
Parents can contact us at info@lafrench.us with any request.

Without contacting us
- Decline or withdraw location access, in the app or in your phone settings.
- Turn off notifications or change topics.
- Delete your favorites or uninstall the app.
- Refuse or change website cookies, or turn on Global Privacy Control.
GDPR rights (all users)
You have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict, object to and port your data. You can also withdraw your consent at any time and, under French law, set instructions for your data after your death. You may lodge a complaint with the CNIL (3 place de Fontenoy, TSA 80715, 75334 Paris Cedex 07, France — www.cnil.fr) or with the data protection authority in your country.
U.S. residents
Depending on your state of residence (California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, etc.), the law gives you in particular:
- the right to know what data we process and to access it;
- the right to have it corrected or deleted;
- the right to data portability;
- the right to opt out of sale, sharing or targeted advertising.
We extend these rights to all our U.S. users, whatever their state. We do not sell or share your data. We will not treat you differently because you exercise these rights.
How to exercise your rights
Email info@lafrench.us or our DPO at dpo@lafrench.us and describe your request. Because the app collects no identity data, we may ask for details about your device (model, date you enabled notifications) in order to find the data linked to it. We respond within one month. This period may be extended by two months for complex requests; we will let you know if so.
12. Changes
We may update this policy. The last-updated date appears at the top. If we make a material change, we will notify you on the website and in the app before it takes effect.
